Default Moving to Australia...what about my debt in America?

Hey all...
My hobbies and I are going to be heading to his home country within the next year or so...and I have a few questions about debt because I've heard a lot of mixed responses...
I have student loans...boy do I have student loans...some people have advised me that I can just "forget about the debt" when I get to Oz. (I'm not going to NOT pay my student loans because I think that is ethically wrong, however I will take advantage of some time to get settled and well employed). My question is...is that true? Other than my school loans, I don't have much in the way of debt...no credit cards, just one medical bill, and a car payment. So, I want to know, frankly, will I be obligated to pay these things when I get to Australia? (I am asking because I have heard a lot of mixed things about this and I just want opinions. I am in no way a criminal fleeing with a huge debt or anything so please, don't misconstrew this as I'm sure someone will...)
Thanks in advance
