There are still many people out there successfully building UK Buy To Let portfolios. If you are just starting out it's probably best to start in a local area you know.
There are plenty of strategies to select from but here's a few:-
- Buying in an area next to a current hot spot.
- Buying Below Market Value at a discount large enough to allow a no money down deal or even equity withdrawal.
- Buying in low price areas (usually in the north).
- Buying properties with planning potential e.g. convert to flats or room for an additional property.
- Buying the worst property in the best location, refurb & rent/sell.
Market Research is the key, there are no shortcuts i.e. hard work all the way, you can be successful in the UK!
