The vast majority of Communist buildings come in two varieties - nine-storey buildings with a lift, or five-storey buildings without a lift.
In the five-storey buildings, the higher up an apartment is, the more of a premium they attract, despite not having a lift.
Whenever I have been looking for an apartment to rent though, I have told the agents that I don't want anything above third floor though or else I'd have a coronary every time I tried to drag my groceries up the stairs!
If you've ever wondered why Eastern Europeans keep so fit though - now you know. It's walking up and down those stairs all day!
