We used to holiday around Olhos D'Agua. Horse Riding is quite close by at Vale Navio. Renting is usually more expensive near the coast. However there is a vast amount of building going on in that area and you may find a flat to rent as a result.
May be worth giving the local school a go for a 5 yr old
