I originally posted the below on the legal thread but it is perhaps more appropriate on this thread.
Dear Lyndsay
Im glad I didnt read your post or Zaieds response above before we transported our boxer dog to cairo. This was in Jan 06 so perhaps the rules have changed but our experience was quite simple.
We lived in south of france at the time and had booked a flight from Barcelona direct to Cairo. We rang Egypt air in Barcelona who booked the dog onto the flight, told us to pay for her separately on arrival at Barcelona airport, told us about the medical / vet requirements tests that were needed so we did all that in the appointed timeframe. No mention of embassy stamps being needed. We purchased a big dog box in which he would travel. We got to the airport in Barcelona and checked in and had to pay for the dogs ticket - it wasnt cheap (Euros 900). No one at Barcelona airport was remotely interested in looking at the dogs vetinary book. The biggest difficulty we had all day was getting the dog in the travel cage ! Finally we did manage it and we said a prayer that she wouldnt freeze to death in the planes hold.
On arrival at Cairo we passed thru immigration and went strait to baggage reclaim. We were delighted to see the dog in perfect condition on the baggage carousel. We took her out of the box, put a lead on her and strolled thru customs. No one stopped us and noone asked to see her papers. Unbelievable but true. She is very happily living in Cairo where her hobby is killing cats.
I will be much more concerned when we try to bring our other dog from France to Cairo.
I expect this happens in Cairo fairly regularly. No one is really interested. The wonderful thing about egypt is that there are laws but adherance to them sometimes seems to be completely optional. I wouldnt be at all surprised if you have the same experience in the end. Hope you will let us Know how it all turns out.
If you are not travelling Egypt Air I suggest you call them and ask them what they suggest.
Nothing in the above is meant to suggest you break the rules but I expect that different carriers will tell you different things.
Best regards
Jeremy
