A lot will depend on your present nationality
First port of call should be the immigration department website they will have all your answers as to how long you can stay per year etc.
Is this to be a holiday home or residence. If residence you need to get access to the US on a permanent basis now you defiantly have to go the immigration dept
As for purchasing a property many more questions come into play
Do you need a mortgage
How much do you have to put down
If you have cash you have to be able to verify its validity
and if all this gets you there and you do have cash look at the Foreclosure properties that are all over the place at the moment
