Crime.....it doesn't matter one dot (or Dotty) what the statistics say, they are entirely irrelevant to some poor unsuspecting tourist or prospective property buyer. What counts is their perception of Brazil. To the average man Brazil means favelas, football, women and carnival and all based round Rio/SP and Salvador. When I first went back to Brazil everyone but everyone said "be careful" nobody said...read these statistics! So, until someone in Brazil is smart enough to publicise those statistics and convince the buying and travelling public that the problem is nothing like it is perceived, then there will be a negative associated with Brazil. And, selling concepts is not one of Brazil's best assets. Maybe they should give t to a load of redundant off plan Estate Agents, they know how to talk up the positives!

Does that mean you would accept calling the US a third world country?

Who knows what the numbers would be for suicides here in Brazil. By violent death I mean murder.

In the U.S. there are approximately 14,000 murders per year, and that number has been steadily decreasing. In Brazil you have approximately 60,000 murders a year, 2 years ago the number was 57K and change, and according to the latest surveys and research the problem is getting worse, not better.

Dotty;

If one can get to Salvador easily, which they can, then they can certainly get to Aracaju easily. There are anywhere from 2 to 4 Salvador-Aracaju flights per day and the flight is 25 minutes in length.

Or one can drive a car, one of brazil's few good roads, 300 km's, or 3 to 3.5 hours.

If you noticed Brazil is nowhere on the list, for whatever reason they omitted them. Be we know what their murder rate is, and it's approximately 23 per 100K, that would put them in front of Russia on this list, and behind Venezuela, which would be 5th worst per capita worldwide.

And damn, by coincidence, a buddy of mine just phoned me, at this moment, to inform me that an american friend of ours, his name is Bob and he spends six months a year in Aracaju, was just interviewed by the local news on tv because he was shot at noon today, coincidentally just 30 minutes after I saw him in traffic at 11:30 am this morning. He and another american guy went to the new bridge they just built here to take some photos and a guy on a bicycle with a gun tried to rob them and evidently they resisted......and he got shot in the knee.

I understand that these types of things can "happen anywhere", that's usually the cries heard by Brazilians when a "gringo" talks about how dangerous it is here in Brazil, but I gotta tell ya, it sure seems to happen a helluva lot more frequently here.

Amazing..... in Brazil sh*t like this never amazes me anymore.

The worst place I ever been as far as a bad feeling, malandros, bad looks, etc; was Salvador - Bahia.

My first trip to Bahia was 2004.

A Taxi guy: young, fat black dude, cocky f*cker, picked me an my namorada up at the lighthouse in Barra on a Saturday around mid-day. We directed him to the arts and crafts building (forgot the name) downtown near Pelohino. The asshole started talking smack and convinced my Carioca girl about 'another area past downtown' that was a better place. I reluctantly followed along and 25 minutes past downtown we were headed out to BFE, when the car stopped at a light and I opened the door and quickly got out. The guy went nuts! No doubt he was taking us somewhere bad! Beware: if you're a white dude with a beautiful Brazilian woman, you will encounter animosity/racism/whatever-the-f*ck you wanna call it in Brazil, and in Salvador, it's much worse.

I have no plans of returning to Salvador again.

Thats scary.After the incidents in Natal with the shottings on the beach and in PN a friend went for a night sit with her boyfriend on the beach in Natal.It was early hrs 3am I believe .A gun was put to their heads and the robber threatened to kill them if they did not hand over their mobile and the small amount of money they had on them on them.
The bad thing is that in Brasil they just pull out a gun for small robberies like drinking a glass of water and they damn well use it.It is not a joke.There are many horror stories!
