Jan 2008 Holiday Which quotes (as for 2007):

Members travelled to Egypt as often as they did to Mainland Spain & Turkey

and almost as much as to Balearics & Portugal

and more than to Cyprus.

This is not an accurate set of figures since it is only Which readers, however it does sho that Egypt is getting to be very popular with Brits even if it's not that obvious in Hurghada.

I find those figures very hard to believe when you look at the amount of flights each week to Spain and compare them with the amount of flights to Egypt but, as you say, Holiday Which readers are not a representative sample.

If it were a sample of Sun readers, then Spain probably beats Egypt by a factor of 100:1!

Hmmm,

Spain I would say would definately be more popular,but we musn't forget Egypt also has Luxor,Sharm,Cairo as well as Hurghada so i'd be hard pushed to say 100 to 1 but it's definately more popular at the moment.

The holidays were only short haul for readers "last" holiday
- and since this was during autumn / winter period that might explain the bias towards Egypt which is MUCH better weather than anywhere in Europe.

I think Egypt has excellent weather certainly like it more then the Canaries
