We are in Sharm for the next 10 days looking to furnish our apartment in Naama Bay (Naama View). So far we have:
1. Hired a car via the internet from England (Europcar turned out the cheapest at £230 for two weeks). Got to the airport and were met OK but then taken to the office(a car park) in Nabq to do the paperwork (eventually). First car had AC fault so we took another (not cleaned one). Car etc working OK - Renault Clio - needed International Driving licence. Been stopped twice so far by road blocks. Driving easy in day, at night a little more attention is required to see drivers with no lights, driving on wrong side and the roads bumps at crossings and roundabouts.
2 Tried to find a map with Rowasat(recommened by Queenie for furniture makers. Eventually got one (In the free 'Book' magazine - see their web site (]The Book – Sharm el Sheikh, Sinai, Egypt – Home page[/url] ). It is a strange walled place with several streets of workshops. To get to it go from Naama Bay towards Sharm and at the petrol station turn right and keep going for a kilometer or so and it is in front of you (just as you pass the big bus station on the left). Found a couple of places that are coming to quote. Worth mentioning QDS - one of the owners is English (Vince). We had a good look round the workshops (I am an Engineer and so was Vince). They are well organised and the quality is very good (doors are straight, drawers slide well and finish good) - but as you would expect unfortunately not the cheapest!. Another manufacturer (Wael) is on the same road and actually lives in Naama View (he looks down on our terrace from his roof!) - both (all) will make whatever you want - we have brought plenty of catalogues. Having furniture made looks to be adding up to about 7K for two bedrooms (all apartment contents) but that is a lot of stuff as we intend to live in it and not rent it out.
3. The new Metro in Nabq is great - good choice, good prices and cooked food excellent.
4. Some one mentioned the electrical shop by the Metro, we had a look - Ok , not much choice, seemed expensive and TV have only 1 year guarantee. In Hadaba the Virgin store (El Mercato centre) has just opened had similar TV's for similar price but with 5yr guarantee. DVD players seem expensive (£100+) so worth bringing a cheap one from UK?(multiregion).
5. Get you travel visa (if you want to go out of Sharm) on the way in as it is a real pain if you want to go back and get it later (they block you in a cubicle and try to get a bribe to complete it - just refuse, in the foyer are the tourist police who will help)
6. Quilts are expensive £40+ for king size.
7. All the other stuff on this site was helpful (have brought towels, sheets, toaster, kettle, iron and cutlery from Uk and it is much cheaper and better quality).
8. Haven't found any of the other Engish buyers on the Naama View complex yet.
9. Got Local Vodafone SIM for £2.50 (some shops up to £10.00) and topped OK - will be much cheaper than our last mobile bill for Egypt.

Off to Sharm today to look for curtains and bathroom stuff.
Will keep you posted (enjoy the rain at home! - struggling with 40deg C, the car said 47 this morning but I think it was bluffing)

Hi John - great post thanks.

Rowaysat is a strange place isnt it!! I have now ordered mine from Mostafa at Idea4furniture, showroom is in Jasmine Centre at Nabq. Another owner got a quote from him for £6500 for a 2 bedroom. We decided to order the package from im - there is alot in it ( including duvets, covers, pillows etc ) and good quality - and just deal with 1 person.

My hold luggage will be mainly full of stuff for the apartment so hoping to get limited clothes in hand luggage.

How long are you in Sharm for? I fly out on Monday and arrive early hours Tues to do my handover as apartment is now ready. I am staying in Nabq for a week.

I have sent Elaine ( Golfgirl ) to see if she is still in Sharm.

The weather has been terrible here!

Hope your having a great time.

Alison

Thanks Simon. Mine is still being made and I am flying out for the handover and get the keys for Mostafa so he can get into the apartment and payfor the meters so they will turn the elec on for him. I doubt anything will be put in by the time I go out. Another buyer on Sierra that is also looking to order the package from Mostafa is hoping to fly out end July beg Aug and I have asked if he could get Mostafa to show him my apartment ( which will be fully furnished by 8th Aug ) and take some pics to post.

Sunshine here I come!!

Hi Alison,

We are over here until 21st - In Naama Bay but we have the car for the full stay so can get about - we could compare apartments if we can meet up - where & when?. We are staying at the Tropicana Rosetta.

Update on our travels:
1. Last night we had another visit to Sharm. Going in by the 'EXIT' gate, about 50 yards on the right is a 7/11 supermarket, downstairs the prices are good for all the usual stuff but there is also an upper floor which has brushes, mops etc very cheap but it also has a range of fridges, microwaves, Tv's etc at good prices. The fridge freezers were especially good The local one was under £200. They will deliver for a small charge.
2. Just opposite the 7/11 is a small arcade and about third down on the right is a curtain maker - communication is a struggle (unless your arabic is better than ours) but prices were very low for made to measure - but no fitting service. Two large patio curtains plus a bedroom were about £120 including a seperate black out curtain behind each fabric one.
3. At the top of the road, stop - there are three shops worth mentioning:

-across and to the right a bit is a small alley and at the end is an electrical shop (lots of light hanging down)- fixed prices and a good range, very nice owner (Mohamed, excellent English and probably Italian as that is what his wife is) Worth a look. He can arrange fitting at an extra charge.
- standing at the end again, in front of you and to the right a bit is a small shop front with steel pans etc that look commercial. Inside it is a little shop but is jammed with stuff that hotels use - white plate, cups, saucers, saucepans and general kitchen stuff etc at very reasonable prices. (difficult to see crockery anywhere). The shop is called 'Yathrib'
-End of the street again, turn left, then first right and three shops up is another curtain shop - good English, will make an fit anything but quite expensive. Same curtains as above about £340 and plus £100 for metal curtain poles and fitting.

Today we have been back down to Hadaba and found an up market crockery/glass/kitchen knives etc place just opposite the McDonolds at Il Mercarto (near Virgin store)

(Alison- We have not worked out how to send you a private message - we could then give you our local Egypt number.)

cheers to the Uk - the water in the pool was warm today ( and I am now burnt as a result of enjoying it for too long)

Hi John - you can't send a private message until you've made about 6 posts...so I reckon 1 more to go. It has to be more than just a line ot two though. Have you introduced yourselves in the Introduction thread at the top of page 1. That should do it. You should then become an 'Active member' and will be able to PM Alison.

Hi Simon,

they are all now driving cars which is why they can't switch the lights on them or signal.

There is lots of choice but as it gets to European standards so do the prices!)

(where is the bit on the site where we can PM?)

Hi John - there is also a shop up by the Fun Park going out of Naama that sells bed linen, towels, coffee machines etc. There is also a good one in the mall at Old Market. The prices in Old Market are alot cheaper. There is an electrical shop newly opened at Sunny Lakes - out of Naama going back towards the airport, next to Tropicana ( now Amarente ) Garden Palms on the mountain side. They tend to charge the large electrical items by weight! This shop is owned by a Brit lady and her Egyptian hubby.
I will be at Ghazala Beach Bar on Tues eve meeting with Zeiad for a few cocktails. Its only over the road from Rosetta and would be great if you could meet as well. 8/8.30 ish. I will be around the bar in the middle. So you know who I am I will wear on orange top!! We can swap notes xx

Alison xx
