I Agree - I'm 30 mins drive from Heathrow in the Chilterns and the snow is settling nicely - just ready to freeze overnight! In fact the power went off twice whilst I was writing this so must be the "wrong" kind of snow.

On the harrasment issue, I think that it is still much safer in Egypt for a lady than most places. Perhaps in Sharm, being mainly inhabited by tourists, the Egyptian men are loosing their natural respectful behaviour towards women when they come across Western behaviour and imaginative dress sense.

You can't be far from me then Iain, and its still snowing out there.

Btw thanks for the information re sexual harrassment, sound advice BUT its illegal in the UK to carry pepper spray so be careful, saying that a good spray with perfume (cheap variety) works just as well

You're all welcome.

Talking abut pepper spray, as I mentioned in the original post, I know of course that it's illegal, but on a 'mere personal' level I think that every girl should carry something protective with her. Not necessarily pepper spray, and this is NOT a legal advice.

All the best,

First of all, I life In Hurghada and I didn't meet something major. I had 1 situation that was in need of action and that's what I did. I hit the guy in his face and made him loose his job. But that's is 1 situation is more then 2,5 years.
Ok, had also some smaller situations, but these are usually too small to really take action, except the angry face and non-verbal warning to break his nose with your elbow.

About the pepperspray, I think there is not really a reason for measurements like this. I think it's a bit over the top. There are easier and cheaper solutions.
For example, everybody has a set of keys, on a key ring. Put your middle finger through the ring and let the keys rest on the outside of your hand. and then put your hand in your pocket or bag.
If action is needed, you can hit the guy (or girl) with your keys. You don't hurt your own hand, but have the surprise on your side.
Or if you feel somebody following you, take your phone and pretend to be calling to ....... whoever... and tell your imaginable friend exactly where you are and that you will arrive after x minutes and ask them to open the door for you because your getting close........ because nobody is so stupid to attack somebody calling, giving detailed infor about location, timing and asking him to wait for you., because the person on the phone will understand immediatly that something is wrong, if they hear something, or if you're late.

In any situation it's important to think about your attacker. What does he/she not like, what does he/she not want?

Example, once I was on Holiday in Russia.
Me and some friends went to a discotheque and that was not as expected. Me and Fanneke didn't like it.
The discotheque was just around the corner of our hotel, so we decided to walk back. In the daytime this street looked pretty ok, and crowded. at night that was different. It was so silent. and the only people we saw we older drunk man.
And they all seem to come towards us. Two girls, barely 16 years old, alone on the street and not russian.
I hope you can imagine the feelings rushing through our bodies.

Do you remember t.A.T.u.??? The two russian Lesbian girls singing 'all the things she said' At this time this some was very high in the hitlists, and in the news, because Russian and lesbian...... etc etc etc.

I remembered this and told me friend to put her arm around me and pretend that we were totally in love and drunk. We did it, and it worked. Russians don't like lesbians.

That's what I mean, think about your attacker, what he wants, what he likes and what he dislikes.

Be smart!

Hey girls, don't let anybody cross your borders and if they do, be assertive.
But most of all, don't worry, if you don't put yourself in 'dangerous' surroundings, Egypt is more safe that Europe. I feel perfectly fine here, were in Holland sometimes I was scared.

Good luck,

Huda

Hi Huda - maybe Pepperspray is better than hitting someone in the face and breaking their nose with your elbow and risk being in trouble with the authorities! We cant condone violence and the way to stop it is to report to the authorities and ensure that it is pursued and the appropriate action taken.

As for dont put yourself in dangerous surroundings - we were walking in Hurghada and our daughter was behind us ' her mum and dad ' with her friend and a shopkeeper pinched her backside! She was 12 yrs old at the time. How was she putting herself in dangerous surroundings? Come on please Egypt is well known for sexual harrassment. Yes we can apply violence but that wont achieve anything. Its just like a slap on the wrist and they will continue. Dont lets put ourselves down as well. Report as Zeiad says and get them arrested and charged and not end up in the cells ourselves.
