hi queenie - asalamalekum

how are you? i had noticed when reading something you had written and also you had pictures on the forum too about window and door grilles, and particularly as i have a top floor apartment, i had not really thought too much about secyrity yet! but what you wrote has been on my mind, can you please give me contact details of the person who did this for you, so that in the future i can contact them.

i was also in a hardware store yesterday (sat) and saw those cheap plastic bags you talked about (£1?) though these were a lot more expensive, need to go to the pound shop methinks but you had said that you found them handy for packing things in, i looked at the size and wondered whether they would go as hand luggage or normal luggage could not see how i would lock them, just wondered about any further thoughts you might have on this.?

shokran - p.s. have a nice time over the holidays, lucky you!

Hi Nubianqueen - lovely to hear from you and hope you are well.

Ref the grilles - you should be able to get someone locally to make these for you. I used a local and he has done a good job. I expected it just to be bars and got a nice surprise when it looked like a lotus flower. The reason I had them done is because I am on the ground floor and my bathroom and kitchen windows are at the back where it would be very easy for someone to pop the window out and climb in. Although the windows are small and they wouldnt be able to make off with items like tv, microwave they would be able to fill their pockets with personal items. I doubt that you would need them for your top floor.

Ref the bags I founnd these great. Got the small ones for £1 and huge ones for £2.50 from one of those £1 type shops. For the huge one I used it for taking over my towels, bedding, kitchen bits and bobs. I used 2 bags - 1 inside other to give extra strength and marked them as fragile and they went on a seperate belt with the pushchairs etc. They made it the other end no problem. One of the large ones I have left there and I use it to store the double duvet and pillows and it sits nicely on top of the wardrobe out of the way and dust free. You wouldnt be able to lock the bags but TBH I never do. If airport staff want to get into them they will do anyway. I bought the other huge one home and will use this instead of a suitcase again as need to take over 2 single quilts etc. I bought 2 more that were Winnie the Pooh Xmas designs as well so will take those next month. They are great as they literally weigh nothing, hold loads and fold flat once in your apartment. Another good idea is to buy some space bags and store things in them when in your apartment. You suck all the air out with the hoover so the bag ends up very small and easier to store - again great for your towels and bedding.

Looking forward to next month. I have been invited to the Sharm Womens Committee Xmas dinner do on 18th Dec at Maritim Golf Resort Sharm. Really looking forward to this night out and a good excuse to get dressed up.
Take care
Alison xx

Default pioneer woman!

asalamalekum queenie

shokran for your information and tips, you are such an adventurous woman i know you are going to enjoy your life in egypt. i saw those bags but in an expensive part of london, the smallest was £2.50 so i will definetly go to the pound shop when i can and print out your tips. i guess i will take the chance that the bags will be o.k. when i stuff them with various!

anyway i still need to take over my house, in suitcases for now, my bedroom looks like a warehouse, surprising how much stuff westerners have eh? hmmm!

once again shokran and if you speak to lsab please give her my best.

Good Luck! I've been studying classical arabic at evening class for some years but still rubbish at it as I don't do the homework. I can read some, speak some, understand some...love it BUT those verbs!! and the grammar!! ah well. There is an Egyptian Arabic phrasebook by Lonely Planet...very helpful if all else fails!

Default aiywa or la la la!

shokran -not much hope then is that what your saying, seems to be a lifes journey. i know when i have been and what i read there are many foreigners (not sure right spelling) who speak, so i must inshalla. please dont tell me about verbs etc. makes my blood run cold! just done a bit of writing, yes hes teaching me this also, i had and i mean had just wanted to be able to make conversation, but it seems its not possible without knowing the alphabet, do you think this is right?? anyway im going to carry on cos i cant rely on my egyptian friends for everything can i? anyway they always point out to me those who are not egyptian who can speak arabic what can i say!

nice to converse with you in english, can we do it in arabic also, what do you think?
