In my opinion, the best place for retirement is Motril. Why? Because:
-Despite the increasing amount of tourists, it is still unspoilt. Motril has kept out of the tourist business for a long time, so we've had plenty of time to observe mistakes made in other areas. The kind of tourism that we have is quiet, relaxed, golf-related...
-The weather is great. Remember this is the Costa Tropical, but nothing to do with crowded places like Almuñécar and La Herradura.
-This area isn't as expensive as other coastal areas in Spain. But that will change!!!
-There are companies like inmobiliaria-tropicalbeach, specialized in promoting top-quality apartments in golf resorts. If you're interested in investing in the area, don't hesitate to write. My e-mail address is: chirimoya4@hotmail.com

Motril actually consists of several different parts. You've got the town itself, the harbour (with its traditional fishermen district), the beach (many people live there all year round) and Playa Granada, a more exclusive part of beach where the King of Belgium has got his summer residence.
Motril offers excellent public health care, a hospital, public transport, Granada (and all the culture and monuments it offers) only 45 minutes away by car, Sierra Nevada if you like skiing, an international school in Almuñécar (19 km from Motril), good roads (except for the last few miles between Nerja and Motril, but next year that will be history), plenty of primary and secondary schools, shopping areas, the biggest beach in the province of Granada, an increasingly important harbour, etc. Basically, anything you may find in any other civilized place in the world, but better.
As for Playa Granada, the area where inmobiliaria-tropicalbeach is promoting off plan properties in a golf resort (5 min from Motril by car), it has grown considerably in the last few years, and many people live here all year round, but right now, apart from a good restaurant (just one), a five-star hotel (German) a golf course and a corner shop-type minisupermarket, you won't find anything else, but within four-five years you won't be able to recognize the place. There will be more four and five-star hotels, Playa Granada will have its own public primary and secondary schools, restaurants, golf courses, university buildings (the University of Granada plans to open an investigation centre here), a shopping centre, a medical centre, areas dedicated to different sports, etc. There will probably also be an international school here due to the high demand. One of the most ambitious projects in the area is Playagranadagolfresort (visit the website).
As you can see, what makes Playa Granada such an interesting place for investment is that it hasn't got everything yet, but the projects are there, so within only a few years this will be one of the most privileged areas in Spain. And due to the huge amount of golf resorts and public areas dedicated to sports and schools, this place will never be massified. That's why it's also a very attractive place for retirement.

Default Why Spain ?

In 2008, Bulgaria had the lowest price level for goods and services of all 27 EU member states, according to latest Eurostat data.

The most expensive EU countries are Denmark with 141% of the EU average, followed by Ireland (127%), Luxembourg (116%), Sweden (114%), Belgium and France (both 111%).

There are a lot of people that exchange life in spain for Bulgaria/

Hi Eurolink I think you are on the wrong page. Spain is not Bulgaria, they are completely different. People who retire in Bulgaria are different to people who retire in France, Spain or somewhere else.

Lowest price is not always the best place to live.

Any other comments on why people think a particular area is a good place to retire.

What else is important.

Climate
Restaurants, Bars
Health services
Local Fiestas
Amenities
International Area or Spanish area
Other expats?

What do retirees look for in a place?

Climate and health facilities are high on the list
This has made Huercal Overa Almeria popular for those in the know!
Almeria probably has the best all year round climate in main land Europe and its modern hospital is one of the best in Europe

The person [ ex pat] who fitted some light fittings for me at my new Spanish home nearby told me that his wife fell and broke her hip early this year
Within 12 hours of it happening she had a new hip fitted at the hospital!
Excellent service all round and this is very re assuring for anyone looking to retire

It would be difficult to come up with a definitive best place to retire as peoples likes and priorities will be different.

We have lived in a number of places in Spain and would say that certain areas of Almeria and the Costa Blanca would suit us fine.
