JÁVEA PORT EXPANSION

Jávea residents’ associations have called for the door to finally be slammed on any project to enlarge the port.

The call comes after Spain’s environment ministry handed over complete control of the decision to the Valencia Region government.

Valencia’s infrastructure council is now studying modified plans presented by company Marina Punta del Este to enlarge the port and installations. Sources say the new plans comply with the law and Valencia could give the go-ahead.

Furious Jávea residents have been fighting plans to extend the port for several years, organising petitions and demonstrations.

Three years ago they seemed to have won the battle when Valencia promised to officially protect the bay, the environment ministry said it would not cede the necessary public-use land and the infrastructure department declared its intention to stop a project that nobody wanted.

Not one of those promises has been kept and now the battle seems lost again.

Sources revealed this week the new project would include 385 moorings, 580 parking places and a shopping area of more than 2,000 square metres. Construction could start at the end of this year and finish in November 2010.
